madmengalsIf you haven’t gotten into “Mad Men” yet, add it to your season pass. It’s pure nostalgia for baby boomers and a history lesson for those of us who grew up on “Sex & The City.” The writing is witty and the plot is rich (as are the character’s appetites for Spam, booze, broads and cigarettes). However, the real eye candy is the insanely gorgeous hair and makeup. For that, I’m jealous I missed the ’60s. Rather than pout, I went straight to the source Lana Horochowski, the show’s head makeup artist, to find out how to create these stunning makeup looks for today.-6Joan Holloway “This siren is put together, sassy and sexy.”Her look focuses on a heavier eye. Horochowski, who is a fan of MAC products, applies the Cream Colour Base in Virgin Isle to lids and follows with eye shadow in Soft Brown.Tip: Black liner and traditional strip lashes are the keys to getting this eye right. Make it modern by applying a black gel liner like Fluidline in Blacktrack only on the upper lash line.2008-10-28-pearlbettyearBetty Draper “Her makeup is clean, fashionable and current for the period.”By day, Betty’s makeup is light with sheer foundation, black eyeliner and mascara. To create a glam evening look, Horochowski pumps up the makeup with thick eyeliner, cream blush in Posey and bright lipstick. Her favorite is MAC’s Vegas Volt.Tip: To retain the retro feel of Betty’s makeup, substitute gloss for matte lipsticks in reds, bright pinks and corals.250-x-250-peggy-olsenPeggy Olson She’s fresh-faced, low maintenance and natural. The point of Peggy’s look is that she doesn’t look made up. “A great foundation is super important,” says Horochowski, who uses a light liquid base to even skin tone and Blot Powder for touchups. She then applies a trio of eye shadows in Orb, Vanilla, and Soft Brown and finishes with a lip stain to add a pinch of color and a natural cheek.Tip: Instead of using a powder blush, try a cream formula in a pink or coral tone. This will give cheeks a dewy flush that’s sexy yet classic.
