    Imagine a child who requires life saving medicine Imagine a child who requires life saving medicine on a daily basis, but refuses to take it. And that to deliver the dose, his parents must perform a delicate mugging of their son, to steady him for the shots he otherwise suffers to accept. The way this works, is that while his mother poises the syringe, his father positions into a human vice — securing their six year old with enough force to fell the demons raging against this new reality, but still gentle so not to squeeze all the angels out of him. For nearly a year, we choreograph this dance around the demands of Rex’s type one diabetes. And as he grows more comfortable taking his shots of @novonordiskus insulin, we begin introducing technologies — like the @dexcom continuous glucose monitor and the @omnipod pump — that make this disease not so dreadful. These wearable devices are downright miracles that are routinely stapled onto Rex’s body — a premise that once again pits Rex against something he’s terrified of and that’s legitimately painful. It’s like asking somebody who’s afraid of heights to repeatedly stand on the roof of a high-rise, inch towards the edge, jump, and find their wings before hitting the ground. Five years later, our family landed on the stage at @jdrfillinois One Dream Gala and shared our story. We helped inspire over $16 million that night to fund a cure for type one diabetes. As for Rex, he’s a healthy eleven years old now. And possesses the kind of strength and perspective that can only be formed through the fire of a profound adversity. You could say he found his wings and that he’s soaring higher than Nicki and I could ever imagine — which is why we cherish all the times we can still hold him tight.
