I personally know journalists who will immediately click delete when they are addressed by the wrong name or their name is spelled incorrectly. May sound harsh, but when you get 100s of pitches a day, you pay attention to the people who took enough initiative to know who they’re pitching. I still get email pitches that say “Dear Nancy” 🫢 2. If you’re sending a cold email to the media, think of the Subject Line as your first impression. As a journalist, the subject line is what determines whether or not I’ll open that email pitch. If it’s relevant to something I’m working on or peaks my curiosity, you’re in luck! The subject line should be clear but not generic. 3. No one has time these days…especially people in the media, who are bogged down in content. Your pitch should be a few short paragraphs at most.
