Celebrities spend hours in hair and makeup for their red carpet moment at the Golden Globes. Sure, everyone looks pretty, but not everyone inspires us. This year’s standouts get brownie points for going beyond the basics. From introducting a more youthful take on the updo to a perfect example of how to coordinate your makeup with a bold dress, we’ve pinpointed the standout stars to channel and included a step by step guide with exact products (scroll down to shop them!) so you can recreate these looks. Oh, and an awards post isn’t complete without our Best Dressed picks. Keep reading to find out ours and comment below to tell us your faves of the night.

1) Rachel McAdams’ Updated Updo

Dove Celebrity Stylist, Mark Townsend, gave Rachel McAdams a cool spin on an Updo, a standard look that can easily go stale. We loved the texture and easy, breezy feel of this hairstyle and would totally wear it for a friend’s wedding or event that gave us an excuse to get dressed up. We also liked the cute story that inspired this modern style. As Rachel was rushing from London to L.A. for the Globes, Mark joked that she looked flush like an English Rose. Wanting to interpret this classic image, he turned the standard chignon into a sexy, tousled version for Rachel’s big night.

Try it:

  • Put a dollop of Dove Nourishing Oil through damp hair, then spray the roots with a root lift spray like Sally Hershberger’s Root Envy.
  • Blow out hair with a round brush and use a curling iron (or double barrel if you have it!) to create a wavy, bendy look.
  • Spray dry shampoo on each section of the hair.
  • Use bobby pins to create a lived-in look by teasing at the crown. Finish with hairspray!

2) Amy Adams’ Fresh Nude Makeup Look

Amy always rocks the red carpet, but last night her bright orange dress seriously took center stage. Amy’s makeup artist, Stephen Sollitto for NARS Cosmetics, let Amy’s gorgeous geranium-hued frock be the focus. He did that by allowing tans and bronzes to take center stage. We loved that her makeup was subdued without looking naked so her features were able to shine. Pairing makeup with a colorful outfit can be intimidating so the next time you’re wondering what to do with your makeup, we recommend taking a cue from this natural red carpet look.

 Try it:

  • Stephen Sollitto used Velvet Matte Skin Tint by Nars for Amy’s tanned complexion.
  • Her amazing lip color is Raquel Audacious Lipstick by Nars, a pink-beige color that is perfect for spring.

3) Kirsten Dunst’s Must-Have Smokey Eye

Keep this how-to handy because this eye makeup always wins when paired with black, who doesn’t have an LBD. Designed by celeb makeup artist Pati Dubroff, the smokey eye was dramatic without looking overdone, and it was expertly balanced by the soft lip. While her makeup was stunning, we’ve got to admit her dress was a showstopper with a jawdropping amount of sideboob stealing the show. What did you guys think of her daring/revealing dress? #therealgoldenglobes

4) Jennifer Lopez & Taraji P. Henson’s Deep Hollywood Side Part

J. Lo’s and Taraji’s hairstyles echoed old Hollywood. However, the deep side parts with extra volume brought on a modern twist that we’re forecasting as a hair trend for spring. Not only is the look super easy to do, but it’s versatile for a casual dinner or a full-on glam event.

Try J.Lo’s hair: (by Lorenzo Martin for L’Oreal Paris)

  • On clean hair, spray L’Oreal Paris Air-Blown Texture Mist to add body to the blow out.
  • Use a round brush and blow dry the hair in small sections.
  • Spray hair with your favorite heat spray.
  • Use a 1" curling iron, curl the hair in one direction, pin it and let cool.
  • Add shine with an oil serum on the front and ends of hair.
  • Brush out the hair and spray hairspray to finish this Hollywood glam look.

Our Picks for Best-Dressed:

Julianne Moore
Julianne Moore is absolutely ageless and always kills it on the red carpet, making her our #1 best-dressed celeb at the Golden Globes. Her sequined blue gown, which had a stunning open back, was perfection. Her flowing, red hair and fresh-faced makeup look sealed the deal. We just love her taste.

Rooney Mara
Always a risk taker, which we applaud, Rooney Mara’s pale pink dress and edgy hair definitely tops our best-dressed list. The ruffled Alexander McQueen dress exhibits romance, while her dramatic down-the-back braid brings a rock-chic vibe that’s so our style.
