toothbrush holderMy family is into organic and natural products, so we jump at any opportunity to make our own at home. That way we know exactly what’s in the product. My oldest sister, Jeannette, was concerned about some of the ingredients listed in her toothpaste like sodium flouride and triclosan that are both considered toxic. So, she decided to look up "homemade natural toothpaste recipes" and make her own. After finding what she felt was the perfect recipe, she made her new, healthy toothpaste from scratch! Here are the exact ingredients and steps to make your own toothpaste.

In case you’re wondering, I’ve tried it and think it’s amazing. Not only does it leave you with fresh breath, but it tastes good! It’s minty but not overpowering. It also doesn’t feel like sediment, which people might think when trying out a toothpaste made with clay. Though we’ve tried toothpaste with baking soda in the past, we prefer this one for both the ingredients and flavor.

Ingredients:

4 Tbs Redmond Bentonite Clay
4 Tbs Organic Virgin/Unrefined Coconut Oil
10-15 drops Organic Peppermint Extract
1/2 tsp Redmond Real Salt Sea Salt
2-3 Tbs Filtered Water

(All of these ingredients can be found at a Whole Foods and/or Trader Joes near you)

Directions:

1. Mix coconut oil, clay, and salt in small bowl with a spoon. Mix in one tablespoon of water and work the ingredients together (the back of a spoon tends to work best). Add more water until it’s a smooth consistency. It should be relatively thick, not smooth or watery.

2. Add peppermint extract and mix until completely combined.

3. Store in an air-tight container; a mini mason jar is great for this!
