We often feel like our days are on fast forward. With so much to do, it’s not always easy to hit pause and settle into sleep. We’ve gathered 5 of our reliable rituals that do the trick, and they don’t involve counting sheep.
1. Beauty Habits
Our nighly beauty routine is like being on cruise control. The ritual of cleansing, exfoliating and moisturizing is so predictable, it’s a great way for our mind to begin to tune out the noise.
2. Ambient Light
Sure you can set your dimmer. But our favorite way to simmer down at night starts by lighting some candles. Anthropologie has the best array of beautifully lit and scented candles. Some we always have burning are the Capri Blue Mercury Glass Jar Candle or the Capri Blue Jar Candle.
3. A Cup of Serenity
Heat usually works magic for calming our body and mind. Our nightly menu includes either a chamomile tea or a simple cup of hot water with a scoop of magnesium.
4. Massage
We’ve found that there’s nothing like a good foot massage to lull you to sleep. If you can coax your significant other to do it, you’ve hit the jackpot. A more realistic option is to work out the kinks with a small massage ball, which will also relieve tension and help your body relax so you can fall asleep.
5. Music
Some people count on music to bring them into another zone; we count on Charlie Rose. I quickly realized the peacefulness a monotone voice could bring, thanks to my husband who watches this PBS talk show nightly. While the material is feeding his brain with philosophical ideas, it’s putting mine to sleep.
